(D4, MM, Event) Chopping Away

[Daidoji Kenzo]

Kenzo leaned closer to the Miya and shared a private thought with her but the look on his face said that it was anything but pleasant.

[Koumori]

Matistutou grunts affirmation to the Kuni's words and goes about searching for more of the strange orange fur from before...

He's unable to find any close, but further into the forest there looks to be something of interest around the trees... It would be taking him rather close to the invisible line that dictated the end of the 'Can still see the sea' band.

Matisutou goes that way, following the clues to the extent of his order.

He's a Lion, after all.

When there, still within the safe zone, he was able to see what looked like deep gouged-out marks in the trees. However, there was no fur on any of them that he could tell.

[Daidoji Kenzo]

Kenzo stopped swinging and leaned on his axe a moment.

"There is perhaps another way, it will take longer and we will still need this wood but it may spare other trees in the future. Kyo-sama, have any of the prior expeditions found any place you would deem a fitting site to mine? If we could establish a quarry...well our need for wood would decrease and all our future buildings would be much more resilient against these storms."

[Shiba Yukari]

I wonder if we're about to see a Crab spontaneously combust?

[Miya Akari]

The Miya shook her head at the whisper, thinking the Daidoji was just a little paranoid. "It's fine. I'm watching out for you."

[Hiruma Heiko]

"You want to dig too, Daidoji-san?" Heiko asked incredulously, "I hadn't thought that the Crane were quite so interested in physical labour."

[Daidoji Kenzo]

"You really shouldn't listen to stereotypes and rumors Hiruma-san. As I keep reminding people this is a place for New Beginnings, were it not one may accuse you of being dull minded and lacking manners."

[Hiruma Heiko]

Heiko lookes slightly put out and bit resigned but realises that Kenzo is closer to the truth than she'd like, so just continues to work.

[Ikoma Matisutou]

Akari raised an eyebrow at Kenzo's words. "A new beginning is not an opportunity to try to turn people into something they are not though. We must all choose what and who we are. Hiruma-san is not wrong in the assumption that most Crane don't take to forestry and mining. She likely just isn't used to the particular nature of people that end up on this type of mission."

She smiled to the Hiruma.

"Try to find an Imperial that chops wood on the mainland and you might be searching your whole life. This place just draws a different type of person."

[Koumori]

Kenzo stopped swinging and leaned on his axe a moment.

"You know, I'm not sure if you quite understand it, but we're not trying to make a heavy impact on this island just yet. It is, you know, trying to kill us and has actually taken people before. Dumb people who go in alone, but people. So hopping from 'Let's get Kyo to build a ton of buildings here' to 'Let's get Kyo to chop down a ton of trees to build with' to 'Let's get Kyo to go into the forest, find a spot for a quarry, and start boring into the land' is going to get me killed." She spoke slowly, just in case he didn't understand fast words. "I also like how you ask me another question after ignoring my previous response to you."

"My apologies Kyo-sama, I thought that Yoshi-san would have told you about the other tree, I should have reported it to both of you. As for the quarry, please forget I ever spoke of it. I am just trying to find ways to make everyone, including the forest, happy. Please excuse me."

Looking for a way out of the situation he had gotten himself into he caught the eye of the Ikoma and made his way over.

Matisutou looks up to see if any of the others about are currently available, particularly the more scouty types.

They always have a certain air about them, after all. He's learned to recognize it over the years.

Heiko had been keeping half an eye on the oddly-acting samurai and was looking at him when he turned.
"As Daidoji-san said. Do you perhaps want assistance?"
She slightly eagerly made to put the axe down.

[Miya Akari]

Akari continues her chopping as the others look to head off.

[Ikoma Matisutou]

"Something caught your eye Matisutou-san?"

"As Daidoji-san said. Do you perhaps want assistance?"
She slightly eagerly made to put the axe down.

Matisutou nods, then gives a shallow bow to the Crab. "Ikoma Matisutou," he says, by way of greeting, and he adds, "and yes.

"When assisting Kaiu-sama yesterday, I noted a strange orange fur present at places where structures had been breached. Peculiar claw and bite marks showed up, as well. Here, I saw similar marks, but I am not adept in...woodcraft. Perhaps those who are," and he nods to the pair, "can get a better read on such signs."

[Hiruma Heiko]

Heiko bows to Kyo, "Forgive me, Kaiu-sama, it appears other duties call me away."

She turned to Matisutou and went to where he was indicating, grabbing her jacket on the way, "I'm Hiruma Heiko, Ikoma-sama, let's have a look at these. Coming Daidoji-san?"

[Daidoji Kenzo]

"I'm not quitting just yet, consider this a water break."

Kenzo stepped up to join the Ikoma and Hiruma, looking at the strange markings. "Orange fur? Did you happen to keep any of it Matisutou-san? Perhaps there are kumaneko living on this island."

"I did not," Matisutou replies. "No real way to do so when I encountered it."
